The NMJL card
Every spring, the National Mah Jongg League releases the year's card - the official list of hands you can play in American Mahjong. If you're joining open play, or sitting at any league table, or just playing with friends, you'll need one. Cards are around $14-$15. Pro-tip: save your eyes and get the LARGE card!

Wait, I have some questions…
-
Most brands honor the code at checkout. A few have built the discount directly into their affiliate link, which means it's auto-applied when you click through - those are marked "Auto-applied" in the directory. Just click the brand name and your discount is already on. If you ever run into an issue at checkout, drop us a note and we'll sort it out.

Four things to start: a set of American Mahjong tiles, the National Mah Jongg League card for the current year, racks and a Mahjong mat. Many of the brands above bundle these into starter kits (Oh My Mahjong's Amara Kit is a great one). And honestly, you don't need any of it to start - Shanna brings everything to your first lesson, so most students buy their own gear once they're hooked.
-
Nope. Shanna brings luxe tiles, loaner NMJL cards, custom guides, and everything else you'll need. Show up empty-handed, leave with a new obsession.
-
A lot. American Mahjong uses the National Mah Jongg League card that updates every year with new winning hands. Chinese Mahjong has a completely different scoring system, no annual card, and slightly different tile usage. Shanna teaches American Mahjong, the version most commonly played in clubs, community centers, and friend groups across the U.S.

Most students feel comfortable playing a full game after 3-4 lessons. The Mahjong for Beginners series is built around that timeline. After that, it's just reps - the more you play, the better you read the card and the faster you build hands. See Offerings →
